Sheriff’s Office Attorney Fees
The following documents are statements that I obtained through an open record request from the year 2022 up through the Fall of 2024. I would like to put emphasis on the statements through the year 2022. This was when Sheriff Wilz and his administration refused to take responsibility for the police report that was altered by Detective Captain Julie Thobaben. In this report, part of a sentence had been omitted regarding an alleged illegal inventory search that had been done. (See 2022 Altering of Reports for further details regarding this case.)
Not only did Sheriff Wilz and his administration refuse to take accountability for this mess up, which would have been an easy thing to do by the way - they continued to rack up the county attorney bill by fighting and defending their actions. Who paid for this? I can guarantee it didn’t come out of the Sheriff’s pocketbook - it came out of the taxpayers’ pocketbook - to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.
I will put this in very simple terms - if they would have simply taken accountability for the “mistakes” that had been made (i.e. altering of the report), this would have been done and over with within a few hours. Everyone makes mistakes (or violate policy and violate someone’s Constitutional Rights - in this case) - but the sooner you own up to those mistakes, the sooner you can move forward and better yourself, so it doesn’t happen again in the future. We can all learn from others’ mistakes but when everyone denies that it was a mistake in the first place, and then you spend tens of thousands of dollars defending that - It’s time to STEP ASIDE and retire.
