Now that the chaos from the blizzard has settled down, I would like to share a sad experience I had with a Waupaca County Deputy during the storm.
My 11 year old Jaz and I were out helping shovel and snow blow people out who were in need. We decided to take a quick snack break at the Weyauwega Citgo. We parked to quickly inhale our snack and saw a Sheriff squad parked in the lot near the road. I told Jaz as we were leaving, "should we stop and say hi and see if they want anything from the gas station." Jaz replied excitedly, "Yeah, do it dad." So I did.
I pulled up beside him so Jaz in the passenger side was to his driver side. As Jaz is smiling and waving out the window, the deputy looks over at us. He takes a double take as he's about to roll down the window, instead doesn't roll down the window and turns to look at his computer screen.
Jaz looks at me confused so I say "maybe he's on the phone or is busy with a call." The deputy then briefly looks back at me just to wave us on, like "I'm not talking to you, leave." He then turns back to look at his screen and refused to look back at us ever again. I waited about 10-15 seconds before deciding to just pull away.
I knew what this was about but I of course (per usual) played it off with my 11 year old that he must just be really busy. You see, I really try to keep my kids out of the negativity that their father endures from the campaign. They just know that their dad is trying to make the County a better place and that's about it.
I don't believe he was on the phone. I don't believe he was busy with a call. Do you know why? Simple. Because a normal officer (and just plain human being) would have at least waved at the child and said or motioned, "hey I'm on the phone" or "do you need something?" Hell, what if we were trying to tell him about an emergency.. or inform him of a person in need of assistance.. etc.
This was the Good Ole Boys mentality helping prove a point that I have shown to thousands of people in this county now - that just because you may disagree with me, you are going to treat me different. This is the mentality that IS going to change when I become your next Sheriff of Waupaca County. Everyone will be treated with love, dignity, and respect!.. regardless if we disagree with one another.
